The Dancing Plague of 1518

In 1518, a “dancing plague” struck Strasbourg, Alsace. Also known as the “dance epidemic”, this weird condition took over 400 people’s bodies and made them dance without rest. Some of these people even died of heart attacks, exhaustion or strokes. It all started in July of 1518 when one woman named Mrs. Troffea started dancing uncontrollably in the middle of Strasbourg. She was later joined by 34 people and soon after the plague spread to around 400 people. At one point it would kill around 15 people a day. Doctors and authorities realized this was not caused by supernatural causes and claimed this epidemic was due to “hot blood” but instead of treating the patients, doctors advised them to basically “dance it out” by building them a wooden stage. It is believed that the modern marathon runner would not be able to survive this type of intense workout. To this day scientists are not quite sure what caused this terrible epidemic, it might have been due to food poisoning caused by the toxic products of ergot fungi or it might have been a case of mass psychogenic illness.

The boy who vanished in the mountains, 1969

Dennis Lloyd Martin was a six-year-old boy who disappeared in the Smoky Mountains with his family on a yearly camping trip in June of 1969. The Martins met with family friends on the second day of their trip and made their way to Spence Field, a spot known for its good views.

Dennis, his brother William, and 2 children from the family they met on the second day decided to run ahead of the adults and hide in the woods around Spence field to scare the adults when they arrived. The children had left the supervision of the adults for 5 minutes. The 2 kids from the family friends and William hid in one location, but Dennis hid nearby because the red shirt Dennis wore would have given away their location. Dennis was last seen running behind a tree along the forest boundary.

At 16:30, when the adults arrived, the kids jumped out of their hiding spots. When the adults asked where Dennis was, no one knew. Dennis's father, Bill Martin, even ran 2 miles down the trail but could not find him.

After a search, the park rangers were called. Once they analysed the situation, the police, FBI, and the army even got involved with a search party of 1,400 people. Despite these great efforts that lasted for over 2 months, neither Dennis nor his remains have been found. There are several theories of how Dennis could have disappeared. Here are the main theories:

1. It is possible that a bear ambushed Dennis suddenly and dragged him away.

2. It is possible Dennis wandered off, and he died due to exposure. A thunderstorm occurred the night he went missing, and the FBI theorised that his body might have been washed into a ravine.

3. A family hiking in the same park heard an "enormous and sickening scream" from a child and saw an unkept stranger hurrying away from the scene and driving away in a white car. Many theorise that Dennis was kidnapped by a child predator living off the grid. However, this occurred 7 miles away and just after an hour (17:30) from where Dennis went missing.

The image above shows Dennis and the location where he was last seen.

A Tiger Shot By A Poacher Found Where He Lived And Waited For Him To Come Home

Tigers are among the most fierce hunters in the animal kingdom. And it seems they may be able to consciously hold a grudge, too.

In 1997 Russia, a poacher named Vladimir Markov shot an Amur tiger, also called a Siberian tiger. Markov then stole the tiger's kill and left him to die.

However, the tiger didn't die. Instead, the large cat tracked Markov's scent to his cabin. Here, the animal waited somewhere between 12 and 48 hours until Markov returned home (also wrecking anything in the home that carried the man's scent). Upon his arrival, the tiger pounced on Markov and killed him. The tiger then ate the poacher.

The attack

The violent attacks took place in a town in East Russia with the first victim, Vladimir Markov a 47-year-old poacher, being stalked and killed by the tiger when his headless and disemboweled body were found near his cabin.

Then a young former soldier Andrei Pochepnya’s blood-soaked clothing, his watch, crucifix, and a pair of abandoned boots were the only items remaining of him after he visited the forest for a hunting trip just days later.

Both victims had been stalked and devoured by the tiger, Canadian author John Vaillant has recounted in his book: The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival.

The alpha-male Siberian tiger, measuring over 9ft-long and weighing around 500lbs, had eaten both of the victims in the rampage.

Tiger’s vengeance

It was driven to kill because Vladimir Markov had mistakenly stolen parts of the tiger’s hunting prize – a boar.

This led the tiger on a revenge mission and Markov confronted the beast with a shotgun, only to enrage it further.

The ensuing confrontation led to him being killed by the predator. And days later Pochepnya, a young local, found himself the next target of the tiger.

Armed with a rusty bolt-action rifle, he stood no chance as the tiger swiftly overpowered Andrei, leaving behind only his blood-soaked clothing and boots.

The tiger then stalked a nearby settlement, sparking panic and chaos. Russian authorities mounted a desperate hunt for the beast.

The lead investigator barely survived the tiger’s attack when a group of hunters encountered him – but his colleagues managed to bring down the creature by shooting it.

How Katherine Knight Slaughtered Her Boyfriend And Made Him Into Stew

Slaughterhouse worker Katherine Knight became the first woman in Australia to receive a life sentence without parole after she decapitated and cooked John Charles Thomas Price.

Most lovers’ quarrels end with an apology. But for Katherine Knight, murder and mutilation were the end result.

Not only did this Australian abattoir worker stab her lover with a butcher knife at least 37 times in February 2000, she then chopped him up, cooked him, and prepared to serve him to his own children.

Katherine Knight during her first marriage, before she butchered future partner John Charles Thomas Price.

Even before this grisly killing, the life of Katherine Mary Knight was marked by violence and sexual abuse that only hinted at the bloodshed to come.

Murder, Mutilation, And A Macabre Dinner Menu

On February 29, 2000, John Charles Thomas Price came home from work and followed his usual routine of checking in with the neighbors before going to bed at 11 p.m. Knight came home shortly after, made herself dinner, watched TV, showered, and then went upstairs. She woke Price, the two had sex, and he went back to bed.

Then, Katherine Knight took a butcher knife from next to her bed — where she had always kept them — and stabbed Price 37 times. According to evidence, he woke up during the attack but could not fight her off.

He succumbed to his wounds and Knight dragged his body downstairs, skinned him, and hung his body from a meat hook in the living room. Then, she decapitated him and cut up pieces of his body to cook in a dish with potato, pumpkin, beets, zucchini, cabbage, squash, and gravy.

She then made a dish for herself, though the half-discarded contents later found at the crime scene suggest that she couldn’t finish her meal.

She then lay down next to the headless, mutilated corpse of Price, took a large number of pills, and passed out.

Price’s coworkers heeded his warning the next morning and called the police after he didn’t show up for his shift. The police arrived to find Katherine Knight’s gruesome crime scene and immediately detained the comatose Knight. Once she woke up, she claimed to have no memory of the night before.

In the kitchen, police found Price’s head, boiling in a pot of vegetables on the stove. On the table, they found two full plates, each labeled with a name. In horror, the police realized that Knight had planned to serve John Price’s body parts to his children.

IN SEARCH OF POWER: A Church Pastor Buries 5 Men Alive in Church Foundation

The bodies which were buried inside the foundation of the building of the supposed church under construction was totally covered with concrete.

It was gathered that construction of the building whose owner could not be immediately ascertained, commenced late December 2015 and was at the foundation level before the gory discovery.

Unconfirmed sources said one of the workers at the site, who heard about the burial of the deceased inside the foundation before it was concretized, alerted security operatives about the evil act.

Policemen were said to have after receiving the tip-off mobilized some labourers who dug the foundation open and discovered the corpses.

The discovery attracted several passersby and motorists plying the road to the scene.

They expressed shock at the discovery and called on security agents to do everything possible to fish out the perpetrators of the act, who they suspected could be ritualists.

Some residents of the neighbourhood alleged that the building believed to be a proposed place of worship, belonged to a ritualist who disguised to be a man of God.

The State Police spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the report said three corpses were recovered from the site following a tip-off.

According the PPRO, “On information, three decomposing bodies were discovered and full scale investigations have commenced with a view to unmasking circumstances surrounding the incident,”

Meanwhile, fear has gripped residents of Ugwuaji as security operatives were said to have swung into action to crackdown on the ritualist and his cohorts who killed and buried the deceased persons, who they said could be more than five.

THE STORY OF RASHEEM CARTER

Inside the horrifying story of Rasheem Carter.

As a welder by profession, Rasheem Carter lived in Fayette, Mississippi. However, at the time of his disappearance, he had taken on a short-term job as a contractor approximately 100 miles away in Taylorsville.

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF RASHEEM CARTER

On 2 October 2022, the 25-year-old Black Mississippi resident went missing shortly after reporting that he was being chased by a group of white men in pickup trucks who were hurling racist abuse at him.

Carter texted his mother the day before his disappearance on October 1st, saying he was having problems with his coworkers and was afraid for his life. Rasheem Carter wrote about having issues with the owner of the company where he was working and expressed that the owner should be held responsible if anything happened to him.

Rasheem Carter and his mother

Rasheem Carter's mother, who lived two hours away in Fayette, was on the phone with her son as he sought assistance at the Taylorsville police station. She heard him explain to the officers that he was being followed and needed a ride back to his hotel in Laurel, which was around 20 miles away.

However, she heard an officer deny his request, stating that Laurel was outside of their jurisdiction. She also overheard someone say that he couldn't stay at the station any longer and had to leave.

RASHEEM CARTER IS FOUND

On November 2nd, exactly one month after Rasheem Carter was last seen alive, his skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area south of Taylorsville. According to Rasheem’s family's attorney, an autopsy report revealed that Carter's head had been severed from his body, with his spinal cord discovered in a separate area from his head.

According to the autopsy report, the medical examiner was unable to determine the cause and manner of Rasheem Carter's death due to the condition of the remains at the time of the autopsy. The report also highlighted that the state of the remains made it difficult to determine the timing of the injuries and that animal activity on the remains further complicated the investigation.

The family's attorney emphasized during a press conference that despite the lack of clear findings from the autopsy, it was evident that Carter did not die a natural death.

According to recent updates, additional remains believed to be those of Rasheem Carter have been discovered in another area where he went missing. During a press conference, the family's attorney stated that this discovery further supports the belief that Carter's death was the result of a malicious and evil act.

He also suggested that multiple individuals may have been involved, citing eyewitness accounts of a group of individuals chasing Carter in three trucks before his disappearance.

Smith County Sheriff Joel Houston has maintained that there was no foul play involved in Rasheem Carter's death, citing earlier evidence that did not indicate any wrongdoing. Houston also stated that the department is still waiting for the results of search warrants to officially confirm that no foul play was involved in Carter's death.

The Brutal Murder of Junko Furuta

Junko Furuta was a high school student from Misato, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. She was born on January 18, 1971. Tragically, she was abducted, raped, tortured, and murdered, in a case that became known as the "concrete-encased high school girl murder case", because her body was discovered in a concrete drum.

The abuse was inflicted upon her by four male teenagers over a 44-day period, from November 25 to January 4, 1989.

Furuta was a popular student at Yashio-Minami High School, known for her beauty, intelligence, and excellent grades. She had a reputation as a "good girl", never drinking, smoking, or using drugs. She was well-liked by her classmates and had a bright future ahead of her.

Unfortunately, in November 1988, the 17-year-old's life took a tragic turn when she was kidnapped on her way home.

WHO KIDNAPPED JUNKO FURUTA?

The perpetrators of the crime were four teenage boys: Hiroshi Miyano, Jō Ogura, Shinji Minato, and Yasushi Watanabe. At the time of the brutal act, they were aged 18, 17, 16, and 17, respectively.

This gang of teenagers was led by Hiroshi Miyano, who had a history of problematic behavior dating back to his early childhood. Miyano's criminal behavior escalated over time, and he eventually got involved with a gangster and frequently committed sex crimes.

He committed crimes such as purse-snatching, extortion, and rape. Miyano was known as the school bully and often boasted about his connections to the Yakuza, a powerful crime syndicate in Japan. This made everyone in school fear him, including his own parents.

He had a huge crush on Junko and approached her with a proposal, but she turned him down and rejected his advances outright. Miyano could not handle the rejection and became furious, as he had never been turned down before.

It was this anger that led him to seek revenge on Junko, and he enlisted the help of his friends to carry out the heinous crime.

JUNKO FURUTA’S BRUTAL KIDNAPPING, TORTURE AND MURDER.

A few days after being rejected, on November 25, 1988, Miyano and Minato were hanging out in a local park in Misato, looking for unsuspecting victims. At around 8:30 p.m., they spotted Junko Furuta riding her bicycle as she was returning from her part-time job.

Minato kicked Furuta off her bike, creating a distraction, and Miyano approached her, pretending to be a concerned bystander offering to escort her home. Unfortunately, Furuta accepted his offer without suspecting anything.

Miyano led Furuta to an abandoned warehouse where he told her about his connections to the Yakuza and raped her. Later, he took her to a nearby hotel where he raped her again, threatening to kill her and her family if she made any noise. At around 3 a.m., he took her to a park where Minato, Ogura, and Watanabe were waiting. There, the other boys also raped her.

After the initial attack, the boys smuggled Junko into Minato's family home in Adachi, Tokyo, and threatened to kill her family if she tried to escape.

They even made her call her parents and tell them that she was safe and staying with friends. Whenever Minato's parents were around, they forced Junko to pose as his girlfriend, though his parents eventually became suspicious that something was not right. Unfortunately, the fear of the boys was enough to keep Minato's parents in the dark about the horrors that were unfolding in their own homes.

Over the course of 44 days, Junko was brutally tortured by the boys in unspeakable ways. They used scissors, bottles, a hot exploding light bulb, grilled chicken skewers, roasting needles, and irons to inflict pain on her. They even burned her with cigarettes and cut off her breasts. The boys hung her from the ceiling and beat her with golf clubs and iron rods, inflicting unimaginable pain.

Junko was raped over 400 times by Miyano and his friends, as well as other boys and men that they knew. One of her nipples was even twisted with pliers. Her injuries were so severe that she was unable to stand and had to crawl to the bathroom. She had a blood clot in her nose that made it difficult to breathe, and her internal anatomy was destroyed, leaving her unable to defecate or urinate properly.

On two separate occasions, Junko could have been saved. One boy who saw her reported the situation to the authorities, but when the police went to investigate, they were assured that there was no girl in the house and left. On another occasion, Junko was able to dial the police with a phone, but she was caught by the boys before she could say anything.

On January 4, 1989, Hiroshi Miyano, reportedly angered after losing a game of mahjong the night before, decided to take out his frustration on Junko Furuta. He poured lighter fluid on her body and set her on fire. The perpetrators punched her repeatedly, dripped hot wax on her face, and placed candles on her eyelids. They also forced her to drink her own urine and kicked her until she fell onto a stereo unit, causing convulsions. Despite her severe injuries, the perpetrators continued to beat her and even dropped an iron exercise ball on her stomach multiple times. The attack reportedly lasted two hours, during which time Furuta suffered immensely. Unfortunately, she eventually succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

Afraid of being charged with murder, they dumped her body in a 55-gallon drum, filled it with concrete, and dropped it on a cement truck. For a while, they believed that they would never be caught for their heinous crime.

JUNKO’S BODY IS FOUND

Junko's body was eventually discovered by a construction worker who noticed a foul smell coming from the drum. The discovery shocked the nation, and the boys were eventually arrested and charged with their crimes. Despite the overwhelming evidence against them, the boys maintained their innocence, and it was only after a lengthy trial that they were found guilty and sentenced to prison.

Hiroshi Miyano, the main perpetrator of the heinous crime against Junko Furuta, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Shinji Minato received a sentence of five-to-nine years, Jō Ogura was sentenced to five-to-10 years, and Yasushi Watanabe received a sentence of five-to-seven years.

Furuta's parents were understandably devastated by the loss of their daughter and were dismayed by the sentences received by the teenage boys who had brutally tortured and murdered her. They felt that the sentences were too lenient given the severity of the crime.

In addition to seeking justice for their daughter, Furuta's parents also won a civil suit against the parents of the boy in whose home the crimes were committed. The lawsuit held the parents responsible for their son's actions, as they had failed to prevent the crimes from occurring on their property.

The tragic story of Junko Furuta is one of the most horrific crimes in Japanese history, and it serves as a reminder of the unspeakable cruelty that human beings are capable of.

The Victor Noir’s Grave

Victor Noir’s grave in Père - Lachaise cemetery by Patrick Magaud, 1984. Noir is perhaps more famous for his dḛậth and grave than work. He was a journalist who was shot dḛậd; the grave consists of a full-sized bronze statue of the man laying down as if he was just shot.

The statue became a fertility symbol - the story says those who kiss the statue on the lips, leave a flower in Victor’s hat and rub the gḛnital area will find themselves with enhanced fertility, a great sḛx life or find a husband within one year.

The lips and trousers' bulge on the grave are noticeably shiny from people ǩissing and rubbing them.

In 2004, a fence was built around the grave to prevent women from touching the statue but after many protests it was taken down.

DEADLY GAMBLE Desperate ‘rooftopper’ Wu Yongning fell to death livestreaming stunt in bid to get cash for wedding and sick mum

The self-described "China's First Rooftopper" who plunged to his death while livestreaming from the roof of a skyscraper, did the stunt to pay for his wedding and help his sick mum.

Wu Yongning, 26, was clinging to the side of the skyscraper and recording the stunt when he lost his grip and plunged from the 62-storey building to his death in November of 2017.

His body was said to be discovered by a window cleaner.

Wu was in the process of creating his next viral video to publish to his hugely popular social media account.

Fans could donate money to Wu if they liked his stunts.

Wu had planned to propose to his girlfriend the day after the stunt and was going to use the money to pay for his wedding and to get his sick mother medical help, the Morning Bulletin reported.

But the daring performance off the Huayuan International Centre, the capital of Hunan Province in Central China, would be his last.

Watch Video below 👇

The clip, which gathered more than 15 million shares online, shows Wu lowering himself over the edge of the building to do his iconic pull-ups.

However, he struggles to hoist himself back up and eventually falls out of view of the camera phone he had set up to record his stunt.

Wu's girlfriend, named only as "Jinjin", revealed that he had struck a deal with an unnamed sponsor for his next video, which, had it gone viral, would have earned him 100,000 RMB (£11,300).

Some of Wu's family also told local media he was trying to complete the dangerous stunt for 100,000 yuan in prize money as part of a competition.

It's unclear who was sponsoring the competition.

At the time, local authorities investigating the case described it as an "accident" and ruled out foul play.

When Wu stopped posting on video streaming sites Weibo and Volcano, his thousands of fans became concerned.

They have since flooded his social media page with tributes.

A Beijing court has ordered one of the livestreaming platforms Wu had used to pay 30,000 yuan ($4,300) in compensation to his mother, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

He is understood to have lost his footing and fallen to his death.

According to the police, believe Wu fell about 45 feet onto a terrace below and died of fatal injuries during or shortly after the accident.

His girlfriend said she believes Wu took a lift to "over 40 floors" and then free-climbed "nearly 20 more floors" to reach the position where he filmed.

Remeber Prophet Daniel Abodunrin, Who was Eaten by Lions for trying to Replicate the Bible Story of Daniel in "the Lion's Den"

Prophet Daniel Abodunrin was a popular Nigerian pastor that died while trying to replicate the Bible story of Daniel. Before the year 1991, He had already performed so many miracles, however, in 1991, he decided to replicate the Bible story of Daniel who was thrown inside the lion's den but survived because of the power that were bestowed on him by God.

Prophet Daniel Abodunrin decided to perform his daring miracle at the zoological garden at the University of Ibadan. On that faithful day, people from within and outside Nigeria were at the zoo to see the array of animals at the zoo, however, Prophet Daniel Abodunrin was at the zoo to put to test the word of God. On that faithful day, He came to the zoo dressed in red clothes.

Prophet Daniel Abodunrin reportedly sneaked into a cage that was filled with lions as he hoped to showcase to people that the God Daniel served in the olden days still exists. He entered the lion's den with the Holy Bible under his armpit. People who were at the zoo tried to persuade him to come back but he refused to heed their advice.

As He entered the cage, he was praying and speaking in tongues. He was also reciting some Bible passages. He called on the God of Daniel to repeat what he did in the Bible. According to reports, on sighting Prophet Daniel Abodunrin, the lions retreated backward. Prophet Daniel Abodunrin kept on walking closer to the lions and all of a sudden, the lions attacked him. According to some eyewitnesses, Prophet Daniel Abodunrin's Bible fell on the ground immediately after the lions attacked him. He died as the lions attacked him until there was no life left in him. After the incident, many Nigerians condemned Prophet Daniel Abodunrin for what they described as reckless action.

The Only Man In History Known To Be A Dwarf And A Giant

Adam Rainer is the only person in recorded history to be both a dwarf and a giant. No, before you say it: we are not describing someone of average height.

Rainer was born in 1899, to parents of average height. By the time he reached his teenage years, it was clear that he was shorter than most in his town of Graz, in then Austria-Hungary. Denied entry to the army during World War One due to his own height - then 4 foot 6 inches - Rainer was unusually short for his age, and classified as having dwarfism, being shorter than the 4 foot 10 cutoff. A few years later he tried to get into the army again but still fell below the height requirement at 4 foot 8 at the age of 20.

Medical reports showed that Rainer had unusually large hands and feet for a man of his size, however, with his feet measuring at size US 10 (EU 43).

Then at 21 years old - long after the point where most people have stopped growing - Adam began a growth spurt that would eventually get him classified as a giant. By the time he was 32, he had grown to the height of 7 foot 2 inches. Previously too short to enter the army, he now towered over just about everybody he met.

In the early 1930s, Rainer was examined by Dr A. Mandl and Dr F. Windholz, who diagnosed him with acromegaly, a rare disorder where the body produces too much growth hormone. The disorder explained his abnormally large hands and feet - a common symptom - as well as his excessive tiredness and enlarged facial features.

The medical team determined the cause of his sudden growth spurt, a tumor pressing against his pituitary gland. The doctors operated on Rainer to remove the tumor in the hope of preventing further growth. Though successfully removed, it was only enough to slow Adam's growth. When he was measured the next year his height was unchanged, but his spine had begun to curve, meaning he was still growing.

As he grew, his health declined, with his curved spine eventually leaving him unable to stand on his own. His eyesight and hearing grew worse, and he eventually died aged 51 in a "home of the aged", measuring 7 feet 8 inches tall (2.34 m), the tallest man in Austria.

There are currently no other known instances of a person being classified as both a dwarf and a giant across their lifetime.

British Airways Flight 5390: The Miraculous Survival of a Captain.

In 1990, a panel of the windscreen on British Airways Flight 5390 fell out at 17,000ft, causing the cockpit to decompress & its captain to be sucked halfway out of the aircraft.

The flight attendant Nigel Ogden, who just happened to be entering the cockpit, held onto the captain for more than 20 minutes as the copilot tried an emergency landing. Most of the crew thought the pilot was already dead, but Ogden continued to hold on.

There was also the fear that if he did let go, the body might collide with the plane's engine, wing, or stabilizer, creating more havoc. All he knew for sure was that the pilot was slipping further and further out the window and his head was repeatedly slamming against the fuselage.

After 20 minutes of flying with a broken window, the plane landed safely at Southampton airport. Ogden suffered frostbite on his face and damaged one of his eyes; he also dislocated his shoulder. The pilot miraculously survived with frostbite and multiple fractures on his arms and hands.

REMAINS UNEARTHED FROM ASHES AT POMPEII BELIEVED TO BE FROM MOUNT VESUVIUS BLAST

Skeletal remains of what are believed to have been a rich man and his male slave attempting to escape death from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago have been discovered in Pompeii, officials at the archaeological park in Italy said Saturday.

Parts of the skulls and bones of the two men were found during excavation of the ruins from what was once an elegant villa with a panoramic view of the Mediterranean Sea on the outskirts of the ancient Roman city destroyed by the volcano eruption in 79 A.D. It’s the same area where a stable with the remains of three harnessed horses were excavated in 2017.

Pompeii officials said the men apparently escaped the initial fall of ash from Mount Vesuvius then succumbed to a powerful volcanic blast that took place the next morning. The later blast “apparently invaded the area from many points, surrounding and burying the victims in ash,” Pompeii officials said in a statement.

The remains of the two victims, lying next to each other on their backs, were found in a layer of gray ash at least 2 meters (6.5 feet) deep, they said.

As has been done when other remains have been discovered at the Pompeii site, archaeologists poured liquid chalk poured into the cavities, or void, left by the decaying bodies in the ash and pumice that rained down from the volcano near modern-day Naples and demolished the upper levels of the villa.

The technique, pioneered in the 1800s, gives the image not only of the shape and position of the victims in the throes of death, but makes the remains “seem like statues,” said Massimo Osanna, an archaeologist who is director general of the archaeological park operated under the jurisdiction of the Italian Culture Ministry.

Judging by cranial bones and teeth, one of the men was young, likely aged 18 to 25, with a spinal column with compressed discs. That finding led archaeologists to hypothesize that he was a young man who did manual labor, like that of a slave.

The other man had a robust bone structure, especially in his chest area, and died with his hands on his chest and his legs bent and spread apart. He was estimated to have been 30- to 40-years-old, Pompeii officials said. Fragments of white paint were found near the man’s face, probably remnants of a collapsed upper wall, the officials said.

Both skeletons were found in a side room along an underground corridor, or passageway, known in ancient Roman times as a cryptoporticus, which led to to the upper level of the villa.

“The victims were probably looking for shelter in the cryptoporticus, in this underground space, where they thought they were better protected,” said Osanna.

Instead, on the morning of Oct. 25, 79 A.D., a “blazing cloud (of volcanic material) arrived in Pompeii and…killed anyone it encountered on its way,” Osanna said.

Based on the impression of fabric folds left in the ash layer, it appeared the younger man was wearing a short, pleated tunic, possibly of wool. The older victim, in addition to wearing a tunic, appeared to have had a mantle over his left shoulder.

Mount Vesuvius remans an active volcano. While excavations continue at the site near Naples, tourists are currently barred from the archaeological park under national anti-COVID-19 measures.
