CHAOS IN VERULAM THIS MORNING

Cash In Transit Robbers Nabbed: Verulam - KZN

Two out of three Cash In Transit robbers were arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) this morning (Saturday).

The arrests followed a sequence of events which started with a Cash In Transit robbery on Ireland Street in the Verulam CBD - KZN at approximately 09:18. The robbers fled on foot with a cash box. They then hijacked a champagne coloured Toyota Corolla and speed off.

While travelling on Wick Street, the getaway vehicle struck a 57 year old pedestrian. The robbers continued driving and collided into a white Toyota Hiace at the Wick & Ireland Street intersection. The taxi plummeted several meters down an embankment.

Reaction Officers converged on the initial scene where the money box was recovered. An extensive search spanning two and a half hours was then launched for the suspects. RUSA Members spotted the black VW Golf stationary near the Waterloo Phase 6 entrance. Two suspects alighted from the vehicle and fled in different directions.

Officers split up and requested additional backup. The first suspect was apprehended after a search of the sugar cane plantation approximately five (5) kilometres from the initial scene. The second suspect fled through a bush and attempted to evade arrest while fleeing through properties. A RUSA Member observed the robber’s movements from an elevated position and directed other Officers to his location via two way radio. The suspect was thereafter located hiding in a bush. Both robbers are Mozambican nationals. They were placed under arrest and detained at SAPS Verulam.

The third suspect and the black VW Golf are still being sought.

How A New DNA Technology Helped Solve A Cold Case.

In August 1999, two teenage girls: JB Beasley and Tracie Hawlett, were found dead in the truck of a car by the roadside in Ozark, Alabama.

They were raped and shot in their heads. The semen collected from the crime scene yielded no positive leads as the DNA was not matched with anyone in the database.

The killer, Colley McCraney, who was 26 at the time went back to living his normal life. He even founded a church, and became a bishop with children.

About two decades later he was arrested and stands trial for the murder of the two girls.

Colley was arrested after the DNA sample collected from the crime scene was submitted to Parabon Nanolabs, a company based in Reston, Virginia. They can predict people's physical appearance using DNA samples.

After Colley's arrest, the police collected another DNA sample from him which was a perfect watch with the semen collected at the crime scene.

How a Parrot Helped Convict a Woman Who M*urdered Her Husband

Glenna Duram and her husband, Martin Duram lived together in Sand Lake, Michigan.

Their marriage was far from rosy, as they struggled to make ends meet; Martin was not working because he was involved in an auto accident in 1995. He relied on his disability benefits.

Glenna on the other hand, was a casino addict. In April 2015, a month before the shooting, they received a notice that their house would be taken away. Martin was taken aback because he believed his wife was paying the mortgage.

With frequent quarreling, Glenna bought a gun and shot her husband to d*eath before turning it on herself. The bullet, however, grazed only a part of her head.

A neighbor responded to the shooting and called the police. Authorities initially believed the family had been attacked by an outsider until months later when incriminating evidence came from their pet parrot, Bud.

The police received a 2-minute video showing Bud repeating the conversation the couple had before the shooting. Bud's voice transitioned flawlessly from Glenna's to Martin's with the last sentence: "Don’t f****** shoot!"

Authorities zeroed in on Glenna, and before long, they found enough evidence to sentence her to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
